Presentation
Biosiris is active in the molecular modeling field. It aims to collaborate with pharmaceutical, cosmetic, biotechnological and food companies in developing research activities. Its specificity is the study of structure-activity relationships of proteins and drugs in membranes and water.
History
Biosiris has been created by one of the reserch centers at the University of Agronomical Sciences in Gembloux, the CBMN (centre de biophysique moléculaire numérique).
The CBMN is a research laboratory for Biochemistry, Biophysics (IR and UV) and computer assisted modelling. Members of the CBMN use their experience of the molecular description of cell membrane components (lipids, peptides, drugs) to attempt to predict the three-dimensional structure of macromolecules.
The CBMN director, Pr. Brasseur has been working for more than 25 years in molecular the modelling of proteins and biological membranes and has published more than 200 scientific papers in international reviews. His expertise in the understanding of molecular mechanisms, and more especially the effects of hydrophobicity, has led him to study the interactions of molecules with biological membranes, as well as the normal and pathological folding of proteins.
The growth of the group and the active partnership of the centre with industrial companies and university research centers has led in November 2002 to the creation of Biosiris, a spin-off dedicated to industrial collaborations. Biosiris benefits from the bioinformatics softwares and the scientific know-how of the CBMN.
